CLASS 5 GRAVEL

Class 5 is crushed rock and fines blended to meet MnDOT Spec 3138, the same spec used under state and county roads. It compacts tight, sheds water, and holds up through freeze and thaw.

Use it for: new driveways, road base, building pads, parking areas, and resurfacing a washboarded drive.

Sold by the ton, over the scale.

Good to know: spread it in reasonable lifts and compact as you go. Dump it too deep in one pass and it will not lock up right.

WASHED ROCK

Washed rock is rinsed clean of fines, so water moves through it instead of pooling. We carry it in 3/8", 3/4", and 1.5" sizes.

Use it for: French drains and drain tile, septic system rock, retaining wall backfill, landscape beds, and pathway base.

Sold by the ton, over the scale.

Good to know: because there are no fines to lock it together, washed rock will not compact like Class 5. Do not use it anywhere you need a hard, stable base.

SAND

We carry fill sand, concrete sand, and septic sand, each graded for a specific job. They are not interchangeable.

Use it for: septic mound and trench systems, concrete mixing, bedding under pavers and pipe, fill under slabs, and topping a beach.

Good to know: septic sand has to meet your system's design spec. Tell us it is going into a mound or trench system and we will get you the right grade.

RIP RAP

Rip rap is angular rock sized in classes under MnDOT Spec 3601, built to stand up to ice, current, and wave action.

Use it for: lakeshore armor, culvert inlets and outlets, ditch and pond edges, and stabilizing a steep slope.

Good to know: placing rip rap below the ordinary high water mark on a DNR-regulated lake may require a permit. We will point you to the DNR permit process before you order.

BLACK DIRT & TOPSOIL

Our black dirt runs through the screening plant to pull out rock, roots, and clumps before it ever leaves the yard.

Use it for: new lawns, garden beds, seeding and sod prep, and finishing grade around a new build.

Sold by the yard.

Good to know: screened topsoil settles less and grows grass faster than raw dirt straight off a job site, because nothing is left in it to break down or shift.

FILL DIRT

Fill dirt is unscreened common fill, sold for bulk grading rather than growing anything on top of it.

Use it for: raising low or wet ground, building up a pad before gravel goes down, backfilling a demoed basement, and grading around a new foundation.

Sold by the yard.

Good to know: fill needs to go down in lifts and get compacted. Dumped and left alone, it will settle unevenly over the first season.

FIELDSTONE & BOULDERS

Glacial fieldstone and landscape boulders, pulled right out of Northwoods ground and sized for the job you have in mind.

Use it for: retaining walls, landscape accents, shoreline stabilization, entrance and address markers, and fire pit surrounds.

Good to know: pieces range from hand-set accent stone up to boulders that need a machine to place. Tell us the look you want.

DECORATIVE STONE

Decorative stone is the finish material: color and texture for spots where plain gravel will not do. Exact colors and sizes in stock change with what has come through the yard.

Use it for: landscape beds, walkways, a mulch alternative around the house, and accents around a lake home.

Good to know: decorative stone is typically spread thinner than base gravel, so a load covers more ground than you would expect.

PICKED UP OR DELIVERED.

Bring your own truck or trailer and load at the pit. Every load crosses our scale house on US Highway 2, so you pay for exactly what you haul, not an estimate.

Would rather have it delivered? Our own trucks run tandem loads straight to the job site, no third-party hauler. We deliver within roughly 50 miles of the pit, from Bemidji and Cass Lake out through the rest of the Leech Lake area. Outside that radius, call anyway. We will tell you straight whether it pencils out.

Spring is the one wrinkle. Frost laws limit truck weights on Minnesota roads for a few weeks every spring, which can affect load sizes and timing. Ask when you call.

FAQ

Is aggregate sold by the ton or the yard?

Aggregate, meaning gravel, rock, sand, and rip rap, is sold by the ton, weighed over our scale. Soils, like black dirt and fill dirt, are sold by the yard. That is standard across the industry, and it is how our scale house and our invoices are set up.

How many tons are in a tandem load?

A tandem dump truck carries roughly 15 tons per load. That number moves a little depending on the material, since sand, rock, and dirt do not weigh the same per yard.

Do you deliver small loads, or only full truckloads?

Call the pit and tell us what you need. We run full tandem loads most often, but we would rather talk through your project than guess. Delivery pricing depends on load size, material, and distance from the pit.

What gravel should I use for a new driveway?
