Where We Deliver · Hackensack
BUILT FOR THE HILLS AROUND BIRCH LAKE.
Hackensack sits between Walker and Pine River on Highway 371, in the wooded, hilly country around Birch Lake and the Ten Section area. The lots out here are not flat. Many sit up a grade through trees, which changes how a driveway or a building pad needs to be built compared to open country closer to town.
THE ROUTE DOWN TO HACKENSACK.
We run out of our yard at 31923 US Highway 2 in Cass Lake, and trucks bound for Hackensack head down Highway 371 past Walker before turning off toward Birch Lake and Ten Section. Hackensack is toward the far end of the roughly 50-mile range we cover, so we schedule those runs as full loads rather than small pickups when we can. Aggregate ships by the ton and soils by the yard, the same as everywhere else on our route.
DRIVEWAYS AND SITE WORK ON A GRADE.
A lot of what we build around Hackensack involves a slope. Steep, wooded driveways need a different base and a different crown than a flat lot does, or water finds its way down the middle of the drive and takes the surface with it. We grade building pads into hillside lots, cut in culverts where a drive crosses a low spot, and rebuild washouts after heavy spring rain moves gravel off a grade faster than it should. When a section of driveway keeps washing out year after year, the fix is usually in the base and the crown, not just more rock on top, and that is the kind of job we like to walk before we quote.
MATERIAL FOR TEN SECTION COUNTRY.
Class 5 gravel (MnDOT Spec 3138) is the base for most of the driveways we build here, since it locks together and sheds water instead of trapping it on a grade. Washed rock handles drainage on the downhill side of a drive or around a foundation. Birch Lake shoreline work calls for rip rap sized to MnDOT Spec 3601 classes, and we will point you to the DNR permit process before that work starts. For yards and gardens once grading is finished, we deliver screened black dirt and topsoil.
QUESTIONS FROM AROUND BIRCH LAKE.
Can you build a driveway on a steep, wooded lot? Yes, this is common work for us around Hackensack and Ten Section. We grade the base and crown to move water off the drive instead of down it.
What causes a gravel road to wash out here, and what fixes it? Usually the base underneath, not the surface rock. We rebuild the crown and drainage first, then resurface with Class 5.
